Polo Ralph Lauren Digs In at 650 Madison

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009
Polo Ralph Lauren , the luxury goods brand that, like so many other high-end firms, has seen its stock battered by the economic headwinds, is digging in at the trophy 650 Madison Avenue, between 59th and 60th streets.

Sources have confirmed that Polo has renewed its lease for more than 150,000 square feet at the nearly 500,000-square-foot building exquisitely located in the middle of the Plaza District — just one block away from Central Park and the GM Building.

Last we heard, Polo was the largest office tenant in the 27-story, emerald tower, which Hiro North American Properties last year sold to Ashkenazy Acquisitions and the Carlyle Group for 0 million.

Polo and Richemont create jewellery company

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Ralph Lauren is joining forces with Swiss luxury goods firm Compagnie Financière Richemont to create a jewellery and watch company. The joint venture – Polo Ralph Lauren Watch and Jewellery Co. S.A.R.L. – will be based in Switzerland , where it will design, make and distribute luxury watches and jewellery. Starting prices for watches will be ,000.

“I believe strongly in this partnership,” Polo chairman Ralph Lauren said of the venture in a statement. “This business is an important part of our global luxury accessories strategy. I am confident that our unique design sensibility and luxury brand-building skills, combined with Richemont’s unique experience on a global basis, creates an opportune way for this partnership to succeed.” Lauren and Richemont’s executive chairman Johann Rupert have been working on the creation of this company for two and a half years. The venture is new to both; Polo has never crossed over into the jewellery and watch market before and Richemont has never collaborated with a designer, instead owning design companies in their entirety.

The pair chose a joint venture, instead of a license or partnership, because of its authenticity. “I don’t have licenses,” Rupert told WWD. “The question with licenses is always who is controlling the design and who has the final say.”

The watches will debut in the spring of next year in Geneva and the first products will hit stores in fall 2008. Neither company wanted to give sales projections. Meanwhile, jewellery sales are likely to begin on a smaller scale than watches. Rupert said that the category would, however, grow faster than watches, taking into account that “generally as a sector, it is growing quicker than watches.”

According to Rupert, this joint venture is a one-off and does not mean that Richemont has changed its strategy. It will continue to own luxury brand portfolios, such as Cartier, Piaget, IWC, Jaeger-le-Coultre and Baume & Mercier. In terms of the strategy for the new company, it will be positioned as a global brand with considerable growth potential in the US.

Do Authentic Men Wear Pink?

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Pink is is so often a colour that we associate with being gay, when it is worn by a man. When you see a pink shirt being worn by a man what comes to mind? That he’s gay? You may be surprised to know that pink can look really good on some men. So the question for you is, if you are a man, would you wear pink?

Pink can be classy, subtle and smart. It can also be peculiar and garish. For example, the pastel pinks can look really good in a semi-formal setting or when you just want to look smart-casual. You need to be extremely careful of the brighter pinks because they can look ‘shocking’ and tacky – they either remind one of 1980s disco or the 70s punk rock days.

What Does Pink Match?

Pink is an interesting colour in many ways. It looks especially great on people with brown or black hair. Pink also goes well with lots of colours, particularly salmon, some orange shades, the browns and black (but be careful here). Pink also looks especially nice alongside white, for example a pink tie on a white shirt.

Pink – Where can it be worn?

Actually a pink shirt can be work any occasion: at work, in a bar, on your days off, when buying groceries.

Of course you would not want to wear it on occasions where an accepted dress code is likely to be broken, e.g. a funeral. You would be advised to abstain from wearing your pink shirt when it is likely to put you in an awkward situation, for example at an interview for a job or an important.

A man can look great in pink.

A Succinct Summary of the Lacoste Company

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Lacoste: The History

Lacoste is a French company and was formed in 1933 by French tennis player, Rene Lacoste. It was during the 1926 US open championship which Rene won which seen him wear the first sport performance clothing. Rene wore a cotton polo shirt which was supposed to reduce sweat.

After the 1926 championship win, Rene’s friend drew him a crocodile which he embroidered onto his tennis shirts. This was to become known as Lacoste’s famous logo.

It wasn’t until his retirement from Tennis that Rene introduced other shirts and started the foray into fashion 1933. During the 1950′s and 60′s Rene’s son Bernard took over the Lacoste empire and started to really expand the product both in the range and to new markets internationally.

During the 1970s Lacoste became a really popular brand in the huge USA market. In the 1980′s Lacoste further increased the product range into items other than clothing, notably aftershave and toiletries.

Nowadays there are over 50 million Lacoste products sold nationally covering a diverse group of people from the scallies of Liverpool to the up and rising tennis stars. One of Lacoste’s most successful and popular products is the polo shirts with the distinctive logo to the left chest. Since the turn of 2000 these have been in massive demand and still continue to be many stores’ most popular product.

New York – If any collection summed up the mood in the latest New York Fashion Week it was that of Ralph Lauren, whose patchwork yet patrician ideas for fall 2009 were all about high society entertaining.

Underneath a series of glittering crystal chandeliers, Lauren sent out splendid patchwork jackets and vests in mixes of windowpane check and Donegal tweed. But he varied their partnership, showing them with anything from tan cavalry twill pants to honey charmeuse silk paisley gowns.

FBH – Philadelphia Fashion Week Fall 2010

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Jumping out of a taxi, I see one model after another walking towards a tall unnamed brick building.  Am I in the right spot, little did I know that in this weathered commercial space, serious professional activities were taking place.  I interviewed two budding entrepreneurs in their 20′s who dream of taking their unique take on fashion to the runways across the world. Kevin Parker (co-founder of FBH) and Sherwin Raven (publicist) candidly talked to me about FBH modeling agency and their presentation of Philly Fashion Week Fall 2010.

What is Philadelphia Fashion Week?

Well its 6 days of high fashion experience, innovative new styles, featuring quality couture garments, interactive seminars and entertainment. It is a place where designers, make-up artists, purchasers and business people from all over can network and experience Philadelphia fashion.
(Take a look at the Event Schedule . You Can Purchase Tickets here)

Why do you keep on saying that this is an “experience”?

Well, not only are we offering amazing fashion shows, an addition we are holding an interactive fashion forum for models, stylists, designers, and make-up artists. Featuring, Debra Ginyard, Wendy William’s make-up artist Merrel Hollis, fashione editor Darryl Brown,  just to name a few. Plus, we have Banana Republic store and Kenneth Cole store hosting two days of our fashion shows.

What made the FBH Agency start Philadelphia Fashion Week?

The Fashion week started in 2007, we were inspired from neighboring cities, wanted a more diverse and hands on fashion week. With the constant fashion buzz in Philadelphia and the city’s own unique sense of style we know that like NYC/LA, Philadelphia too, is a big city that deserves a fashion week. For the past 3 years our following has grown like crazy, we always have our inboxes and phones ringing off the hook.

What type of clothing shall we expect?

From off the rack casual wear to high end couture clothing. Something always different, and also things you could wear for a business dinner. Some of the designers are Philadelphia natives like Laquan Smith who has worked with Rihanna and Tyra Banks and Mike Sam for English Clientele who has dressed Eva Longoria and Paris Hilton. B-Vain couture will be returning, and was actually asked to do the wardrobe for a feature film.

What do you see occurring after this show?

Well we see more Philadelphia designers being inspired to present their designs next year. We are bursting with new models, and will be releasing a magazine soon. But most of all we want FBH to be the force behind Philadelphia as a fashion hub of America, and designers and models to know they have a home here.

What is your message to people who are ambivalent about coming?

We believe that entertainment and fashion go hand in hand, therefore we make sure that all our events are an interactive experience. You will meet buyers from stores, film industry workers, photographers, all the way to young models and make up artists. Be prepared for a good conversation, let yourself go and meet new people. We suggest to not get too overwhelmed so that you remember that this could also help you network and start new business relationships.
